The modern Speedtimer traces its lineage to Seiko's 1969 Caliber 6139 — the world's first automatic chronograph to combine a column wheel with a vertical clutch, both of which remain prerequisites for high-end chronographs today. The current in-house Caliber 8R46/8R48 carries that architecture forward, with MEMS-manufactured escapement parts adding precision and durability beyond what the original could achieve.

At 42mm with a steel case reinforced by Seiko's proprietary super-hard coating, it wears heavier than a quartz chronograph but delivers 45 hours of power reserve and hacking, hand-winding functionality most automatic chronographs at this price skip.
